"Chew on this," says Melrose Plant to Richard Jury, who's in the hospital being driven crazy by Hannibal, a nurse who likes to speculate on his chances for survival. Jury could use a good story, preferably one not ending with his own demise.

Plant tells Jury of something he overheard in The Grave Maurice, a pub near the hospital. A woman told an intriguing story about a girl named Nell Ryder, granddaughter to the owner of the Ryder Stud Farm in Cambridgeshire, who went missing more than a year before and has never been found. What is especially interesting to Plant is that Nell is also the daughter of Jury's surgeon.

But Nell's disappearance isn't the only mystery at the Ryder farm. A woman has been found dead on the track - a woman who was a stranger even to the Ryders.

But not to Plant. She's the woman he saw in The Grave Maurice. Together with Jury, Nell's family, and the Cambridgeshire police, Plant embarks on a search to find Nell and bring her home. But is there more to their mission than just restoring a 15-year-old girl to her family?

The Grave Maurice is the 18th entry in the Richard Jury series and, from its pastoral opening to its calamitous end, is full of the same suspense and humor that devoted listeners expect from Martha Grimes.

Too many authors, too little time! I love coming back to an author I had forgotten about--I get to buy a bunch of books at the same time and enjoy them right away. This was the third Richard Jury novel I consumed within a week or so, and Martha Grimes does not disappoint. I will say that the humor she usually intersperses was not quite as prevalent here, but given the subject matter, that's not surprising.

I was well aware of the Premarin horror and very glad to see a novel that delves into it, explaining how cruel the drug is to horses and how completely unnecessary it is given the numerous other options available to us women. Perhaps the book will enlighten more women, causing them to seek out those options.

Given that, this is the saddest Jury novel I can remember. I won't spoil it for you, but don't get too attached to the characters here, at least not the ones specific to this novel only. As usual, this has great character development and an interesting story. Because the previous novel ended abruptly--as Grimes seems wont to do--I was happy to see a bit more about some of the characters from it. Go ahead, read The Grave Maurice; you'll like it as much as the others...just don't look for a happy ending.

The Grave Maurice Richard Jury Book 18 (Audible Audio Edition) Martha Grimes Steve West Audible Studios Books Reviews

I am in love with both Richard Jury and Melrose Plant along with the quirky pubs that Martha Grimes plunks her people into in order to solve a mystery straight out of Kafka. She makes me laugh, she makes me think, she reignites my love affair with all things British yet isn't it marvelous she's as American as I am. Way to go, Martha!
These books are well written, and the characters well drawn. I found some of the plot confusing, and wonder what the author has against girls, the crimes she perpetuates against girls far outweighs those against girls, I think.
As much as anything else, "The Grave Maurice" answers the question so loudly issued in
"The Blue Last," the previous Richard Jury mystery. In that exciting and well-written episode, the
final pages closed with a bang and the readers could only wonder will our hero survive? And now
we know, thankfully--and with really not much of a surprise--that Superintendent Jury does live and
he's on to No. l8 in Grimes' immensely popular police procedural mystery series. He's still in
hospital, but a mystery opens up to him (as Grimes says, ala Josephine Tey and "The Daughter of
Time") and he sets out to solve it, bandages, headache, scars, and all.

A 15-year-old daughter of his physician has been missing for two years and presumed dead.
Of course, the doctor and the family have not given up hope and this is where Jury, ably assisted by
Melrose Plant and the Long Pid gang, comes in. Taking all the known facts, they begin to splice,
glue, cut, and paste the parts extraordinaire into a viable, working case. The girl, Nell Ryder, was
abducted, along with a famous race horse she was attending. No clues and no ransom note either.
The scenario is intrigue for his soul (and mind) and Jury, with his Dr. Watson (Melrose) wanders
into the very lucrative business of horse racing and breeding. He is mesmerized by the personality
of Nell, who was described by one of the trainers as "a filly dressed up in a girl costume," so
complete was her love for horses. As the local police have virtually given up on the case (after all,
there were no active clues for past two years!), it appears that the effort would be futile; yet, as Jury
acknowledges, there are a few elements that don't add up.

And, of course, Grimes, through the efforts of Jury, Plant, et al., races on, heading for the
final furlong and then, finally, at breakneck speed. With the author's usual style, grace, and
timing, the book is more than a photo finish--it's a clear winner, another "winners circle"
appearance for Grimes. That said, however, "The Grave Maurice" is clearly intended for the
legions of Grimes fans. Without having read previous Jury books, treaders will quickly find
themselves somewhat confused over references to previous episodes. Grimes must know this, of
course, but this book is not a "dead cert." New readers will not find it so captivating and they can
only be urged to start at the beginning ("The Man with a Load of Mischief" and "The Old Fox
Deceived" and the best of the early Grimes "Jerusalem Inn"). Small price to pay, of course, as
Grimes is quite an odyssey--if nothing else just to see which actual pub she uses as the title of each of
these books!) "The Grave Maurice" may not be win-show-or-place, but it goes the full length. Tally
ho! ...
A positive addition to the canon but messily emotional. It is getting a little difficult to figure out whodunit and why. But we are getting more into Jury. Plant I have little use for any more.
Martha Grimes is my favorite living mystery writer and The Grave Maurice does not disappoint. Melrose Plant carries the action, as Richard Jury is recuperating in hospital. Melrose and his cronies in the village pub are in rare form. Most of the characters are well drawn and interesting. However, be aware that the book not been proofread. Names are misspelled. Phrases are repeated in sentences (as if the typist were stuttering!), and a host of other problems.

The story is pretty intense in places. Ms. Grimes tells us that one of the characters is repeatedly raped, presenting the information as if she is giving us a weather report; she ignores the effect of the repeated trauma on the character or the character's actions. I find this an egregious lapse and, sadly, not surprising. Shame on you, Ms. Grimes!
As usual, the juxtaposition of the real characters in the crime, with Melrose and the hilarious crowd around him make me keep flipping the pages to learn or experience more more more. On the light side, the entire hermit line was a riot. I honestly celebrate Melrose's every big & little victory over Agatha, and I feel bad that I don't feel bad about that. The horse-racing and subsidiary worlds were very well drawn. The crime had a handful of fascinating characters, Nell of course being my favorite, Vernon 2nd only to her. I do wish Jury would not mess with certain women, but ultimately I love Jury and Plant et al. Highly recommended.
